Release Day REVIEW & Giveaway: Against All Odds (Love in the 80s) by Rebecca Yarros

Againsttheodds_high

RELEASE DAY FOR REBECCA YARROS! Congrats. Read my review below.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Love the music—never the man. At twenty years-old, Sabrina Caroline was America’s sweetheart pop star, until she took a year off to treat her social phobia that her cut-throat-manager/mom paid top dollar to keep quiet. Now as part of her comeback, she’s forced into collaboration with one of the hottest rock bands topping the charts—Birds of Prey—whose lead guitarist happens to be her biggest mistake…and her biggest regret. Hawke Owens never imagined Birds of Prey would surpass the basement of the Duncan High School for Performing Arts, let alone score them a European tour. But success has its price, and for him, it’s being forced to work with the only girl who shattered his heart—Sabrina Caroline. She’s everything that he remembers and more, every memory and fantasy come to life. At first touch, their connection is electric, but it’s also as strong as her determination to follow her number one rule—she doesn’t date rock stars…even though she’s become one. Loving her again is as natural as holding his guitar, but she’s destroyed him once, and this time the stakes are higher, more public, and the consequences life-altering. Against the backdrop of the birth of MTV, they’ll have to choose between the demands of their label, and the demands of the heart.

My Thoughts:
A second-chance rock love in the 80’s. Although the storyline might not be particularly unique other than it’s a new adult retro romance set in the 80’s, Rebecca Yarros’ first-person writing sparkles, bringing to life these two characters torn apart by years to pursue their own rock/pop careers. There’s angst, heartbreak and happiness between the beautifully written lines of this novella. The author doesn’t flinch from the reality of drugs, alcohol and groupies in the rocker world.

So few authors are able to suck me in and keep me glued to the story until the last page, but this novella did that. It’s a short, easy one-night read. Once you start you won’t want to put this story down. If you lived through the 80’s you’ll appreciate the references, but if you didn’t it’s not a detractor from the story.

Double thumbs up for this story!

Love In Bloom Giveaway Hop

Secondary character romances (blooming love). What do you think? Do you feel like skipping all those pages spent on a romance between characters who aren't the main characters, feeling it's a waste of time and detracting from the main story? Or, can you think of a novel when you enjoyed the side story?

As an author, I think it's a slippery slope to try to facilitate a secondary story that's powerful enough to hold a reader's interest and yet not overpower the main characters' time on the page. Sometimes the story isn't finished during the novel we're reading and it's used as a start up for a sequel, a common ploy in romance novels these days.

I recently read a novel that pulled this off and completed both the main story and the secondary story in one novel: Blood Kiss by J.R. Ward, but the secondary romance was a re-do romance between two already married characters who were finding each other again. Maybe it worked because we already loved those secondary characters. So, maybe this doesn't count.

So, how do you feel about secondary characters getting one-on-one time in the novel you're reading? Love it or resent it?

Thanks for hopping by. There's a giveaway to help you find your next great read.

One of Five Arc’s for 1984: Against All Odds by Rebecca Yarros

About the Author
Rebecca Yarros is a hopeless romantic and lover of all things chocolate, coffee, and Paleo. In addition to being a mom, military wife, and blogger, she can never choose between Young Adult and New Adult fiction, so she writes both. She’s a graduate of Troy University, where she studied European history and English, but still holds out hope for an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. When she’s not writing, she’s tying on hockey skates for her kids, or sneaking in some guitar time. She is madly in love with her army-aviator husband of thirteen years, and they’re currently stationed in Upstate NY with their gaggle of rambunctious kiddos and snoring English Bulldog, but she would always rather be home in Colorado.

Review: The Girl From Summer Hill by Jude Devereaux

A new one from Jude Deveraux!

What it's about:
The first book of a new contemporary romance series set in the mountains of Virginia in a town with full of family legends, romance, and secrets from New York Times bestselling author of the Nantucket Brides trilogy.

Sparks fly as fiery Casey Reddick and brooding Hollywood actor Tate Landers clash in the Virginia summer heat. A chef who puts her career first and her love life second, Casey doesn’t see what every girl in town is swooning over. She made up her mind the moment she met Tate—he’s gorgeous, but stuck-up, nothing like his ex-brother-in-law, Devlin who’s playing the Wickham to Tate’s Darcy in local production of Pride & Prejudice. Casey makes the perfect Elizabeth Bennett—how could she be star-struck when she’s heard Devlin’s damning stories about Tate? As they rehearse together, however, Casey finds herself attracted to Tate—he’s much more down-to-earth than she expected and any physical contact between the two of them literally gives her a tingling, electric shock. As opening night draws near, Casey has some difficult decisions to make. Whom should she believe? The seemingly sincere, slighted Devlin or Tate, whose rough, arrogant exterior may only be skin deep. She’s come to love that jolt she gets when they touch—but will she get burned?

My thoughts:
Jude Deveraux gives us a fun read with a modern day twist on Pride and Prejudice. There’s a lot of entertainment to be had in this read, especially if you’re a P&P fan. We’ve seen a lot of stories that modernize an Austen story. That makes this a huge challenge to be different. I do think the author succeeds and kudos for her for attempting such a feat. The book follows the same basic story line as the classic, but there are a few twists along the way.

The opening scene really grabs the reader and carries us through the necessary slow down areas. Great characterizations, although there felt to be some strain in connecting the two main characters at points. There’s a troupe of secondary characters as there is in the P&P classic which are utterly enjoyable. I’m sure we’ll see some of them in squels.

If you’re in need of a fun, light and often entertaining (aka funny) romance, then you should pick this up.
